Rewarded ads now working with Open Bidding

On January 11, 2021, Google announced that publishers could start trafficking rewarded ads with Open Bidding partners. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the recent development and rewarded ads! Let’s get started.

Open Bidding or Exchange Bidding In Dynamic Allocation is Google’s alternative to header bidding. It’s a solution where a unified auction takes place over a server-to-server connection enabling real-time bidding on ad impressions. With Rewarded ads now included within Open Bidding, publishers have more options to monetize their ad inventory and thus increase their ad revenue.

What are Rewarded ads?

rewarded ad example

Rewarded ads reward users for taking action on ads or viewing ads. Different types of rewarded ads include non-intrusive videos or interactive ads used within apps. The focus is on value exchange.

For example, a user is given the option to watch a video to earn an extra life for a game they are playing on their mobile device. This greatly improves mobile-app publisher’s opportunities to monetize their content and maximize their content value.

Publishers can serve rewarded ads either directly or through Google Ad Manager, Ad Exchange, the Google Mobile Ads SDK, or mediation networks.

Google Ad Manager offers two inventory formats that offer rewards: rewarded ads and rewarded interstitial ads.

When trafficking these ads directly through Google Ad Manager, publishers can use rewarded ads or rewarded interstitial ads. The difference between the two is that with normal rewarded ads, users are given the option to view an ad for a reward. With interstitial rewarded ads, ads are automatically shown to users without an opt-out option offering a reward.

Requirements

Currently, rewarded ads are available within Programmatic Guarantee, Private auctions, and Preferred Deals. Keep in mind that VPAID creatives are not supported for video ad formats used within rewarded ads.
