Have you been watching as your revenue plateaus? Have you exhausted all possible ways to improve your overall RPM from AdSense and AdX with text and display ads? Fear not: there are other revenue streams you can explore to diversify your website’s revenue.

Contextual text and display ads are the biggest and most common revenue sources, of course, but they certainly aren’t the be-all-end-all. Aside from options such as Native Advertising and In-text and In-Image Advertising, we’ve come up with a few simple questions you can ask yourself to kickstart your diversified ads.

1) Does your website have long pages, forcing your users to often need to scroll to reach the end of your content?

This is not a disadvantage! This opens you up to using sliders, also known as “floating” or “sticky” ads. CPM can range from $3 to $6 depending on geos.
Networks that can deliver:

  • CPM Brealtime
  • Tribal Fusion
  • Q1 Media

2) Do you have more mobile traffic than desktop traffic?

You can easily triple your revenue with mobile anchors (ranging from $1 to $3) for mobile-optimized sites. Anchor sizes for mobile (320×50) and tablet (728×90) can be customized for some ad networks. This is less obtrusive compared to mobile pop-ups, as they can be closed anytime.
Networks that can deliver:

  • AppLift
  • OperaMediaWorks
  • Q1 Media

3) Is your website rich in images and videos?

Advertisers are paying out the ear for pre-roll ads in video players because they are 2.5 times more effective than banner ads. They’re hard to ignore, and often mandatory to get to the content. Similarly, if you want to make the most of your image-filled site, then it’s time to start exploring in-image ads.
Networks that can deliver:

  • Gumgum
  • Vibrant Media

4) Is your site’s background, for lack of a better word, boring?

Many people aren’t aware that you can use the entire background of your site as one huge ad unit, which can net you a whopping $5 to $12 CPM at a fixed rate. Go check out SB Nation for a perfect example of site skin advertising done well.
Networks that can deliver:

  • Sublime Skins
  • CPMStar

5) Is your content the star of the social media realm?

Sharing may be caring, but it’s also an often-overlooked way to monetize the content that your users are spreading across their social networks. With the right implementation, a $20 CPM rate is a good source of additional revenue. But rates do vary per network.
Networks that can deliver:

  • BuySellAds
  • Po.st

With any optimization strategy, the scientific method is your friend. Try these improvements one at a time so you can observe the benefits objectively. Naturally, though — not everybody has that kind of time.
